Abstract Family care is still an important means to meet the care needs of the elderly in China. Based on the results of an investigation of the health of the elderly population in China between 2008 and 2011, the present study adopts the propensity score matching method to remove the influence of selection bias, and uses the double difference method to identify the effects of family care on elderly health. We find that family care has positive effects on selfrated health, cognitive ability, and mental health. The spouse caring for the elderly, in particular, can significantly improve cognitive function, but has a negative impact on their selfrated health, while the children care has a significant positive impact on both mental health and cognitive function. This study is not only to find out whether home care has positive effects on the health of the elderly, but also to provide empirical reference for the formulation of elderly health intervention policy and social care service system.
